Hungry Ghost Festival / Phor Thor Festival

Every year during the seventh lunar month, Penang comes alive with the unique traditions of the Hungry Ghost Festival (中元节 / Phor Thor), a long-standing part of the cultural heritage and community life of local Penangites. Across the state, communities gather for prayers and celebrations, transforming neighbourhoods with street altars, traditional offerings, Chinese opera and lively getai stage shows.

One of the festival’s most striking sights is the famous towering 29-foot paper effigy of Tai Su Yeah (大士爷), the King of Hades, which stands as a symbol of the festival and attracts visitors to witness this distinctive local tradition.

In 2026, the seventh lunar month runs from 13 August to 10 September, with the 15th day falling on 27 August. During this period, prayers, rituals and celebrations are ongoing in various communities across Penang Island and the mainland, reflecting the rich cultural traditions and strong community spirit that have been passed down through generations.

More than a religious observance, the Hungry Ghost Festival is a vibrant expression of Penang’s living multicultural heritage, bringing together faith, traditional performing arts, community gatherings and local customs in a celebration that continues to be part of everyday life in Penang.
